It has been 30 years since the terms critical incident, debriefing and defusing emerged in the crisis response lexicon. However, the model originally designed for emergency services requires modification for the private sector.  Further, debriefings alone are not enough to mitigate the often long term impact of tragic incidents;  a variety of other interventions must be included in the “crisis response toolbox.”  Further, the clinician must often move into the role of consultant in order to facilitate full recovery for the organization.

This workshop will provide:

  1. an overview of the development of crisis intervention;
  2. a comprehension of different terms such as CISM, trauma, crisis, bereavement, disaster, emergency, transition, etc;
  3. knowledge of the differences between interventions for 1st responders and the private workplace or civilian community;
  4. a command of the wide range of interventions for various types of incidents;
  5. guidance for the clinician as consultant to the organization around crisis preparedness, response & recovery;
  6. an understanding of different dynamics if you are: Peer Support... internal EAP... external EAP...  affiliate responder... staff from an unrelated agency;
  7. an appreciation of "how too many cooks can spoil the broth": working with other agencies;
  8. an INTERACTIVE and LIVE learning experience... from your desk;
  9. power point slides with live presentation with video examples;
  10. a variety of handout materials for copy or reprint.

Workplace Hostility: What has been learned in 25 years

Workplace homicide, mass murderers, “going postal,” disgruntled worker, threat assessment team, zero tolerance policies… beginning in the mid 1980s,  these terms entered our  cultural lexicon. Initially, EAPs and behavioral health professionals were left flatfooted with respect to providing services, yet by the early 1990s, training, consultation, debriefings, and even participation in the evaluation process became staples of comprehensive EA and behavioral health services.  Since then, workplace homicides have dropped by more than 50%.  However, there has been a dramatic increase in hostility, intimidation, bullying, and disrespect.  This program will provide a comprehensive overview of best practices for organizational hostility mitigation and the role of behavioral health professionals and EAPs.

This program will provide:

  1. a brief overview of statistical trends;
  2. updated definitions of violence, hostility, bullying, weapons, harassment, etc.;
  3. sample policies for Workplace Hostility Mitigation Policy;
  4. strategies to handle restraining/protective orders (with sample policy);
  5. an understanding of how to provide psychological interventions around a workplace hostility incident;
  6. when to get a fitness for duty evaluation, what to expect from them and the role of the EAP;
  7. case examples; and discussion;
  8. applicable handouts.
